The Hot Pot Origin

In ancient China, people celebrate important ceremonies by cooking food in a gigantic vessel or pot. The pot is usually made from bronze. A fire is started at the base of the vessel to boil the meat thoroughly and share the food among the whole tribe. This is the earliest form of hot pot cooking.

A.D.1279, Yuan Dynasty Emperor Kublai Khan once commanded the army for a battle and because of the long fight and hard struggles, the tired soldiers were all very hungry and were going to butcher a lamb. But, unexpectedly, the enemy troops raided suddenly and in order to save time, the soldiers cut the lamb into thin slices and put it into boiling water, once the thin meat slices were cooked, they instantly withdrew it from the pot. Then they sprinkled salt and minced green onion onto the meat and served it to their commander, Kublai Khan. After several bowls, Kublai Khan jumped onto his horse and lead the army to fight against the enemy. Finally, they triumphal returned with captive of the opponent general alive. During the celebrations, Kublai Khan said ”Our big victory is a merit of the lamb”. It was at this time the the method known as Hot Pot cooking spread out and became a famous dish in China.
